How My Failures Made Me Stronger

It’s easy to look at a successful business owner and be completely unaware of the trials and hardships that he or she has had to overcome throughout their career. It is often assumed that, as a business owner with over a decade in the field, that I can’t relate to failure. I assure you that is not the case. In fact, my business was built upon failure. And each and every day I am pushed to take bigger risks in hopes for greater reward.

Over the course of my life I have learned great lessons from stumbling and falling. Here are some of my favorite:

Resilience

Let me start by saying that failure is a very natural part of the success journey. No one wins every time, and if they do, they aren’t risking enough. Through the last decade in this industry I have had my fair share of ups and downs

The great thing about failure, is the more you lose the more you know you can handle. Learning to fail, and then to get up and keep moving is a critically important part of being a business owner, and for many of us, that is built over time and through trials. No one expects that you will always win, but that you continue to push forward. As you learn how to handle each failure your back becomes stronger, and the next big thing doesn't hurt quite as much.

Courage

Just the fact that you have stepped out and started your own business is an act of courage. Lots of people want to be entrepreneurs, but very few are brave enough to see it through. That courage will carry you through all of the ups and downs of business ownership, and will grow each time you fall and then get back up.

Allow your failures to build courage, rather than tear it down. Each missed step, or plan that didn't work is further proof that you are strong and brave and that you can succeed even when it feels hard

Confidence

With increased resilience and courage comes confidence. Through our failures and our ability to overcome them with strength and determination we build a sense of self-confidence that can only be forged through our trials. Now that you’ve walked this difficult road, you can continue to do so with your head held high, knowing that you can handle whatever comes next.

Failure is an essential piece of long term success. I love this quote from Robert F. Kennedy, “Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” I believe that to do be true because it has been true in my life. The times that I have failed in my life are almost always the catalyst to growth. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the possibility of failure, you’re probably on the right track.
